Soneto XV (Sonnet 15) by Pablo Neruda
|

The earth has known you for some time:
you are compact like bread or wood,
you are body, made of sturdy material,
you are as light as acacia blossom or a golden seed.
I know that you exist not only because your eyes fly
and shed light like an open window,
but because
you were made and baked from earth
in Chillán, in an astonished adobe kiln.
Beings pour out like air or water or cold
and, in their sloth, are wiped away in contact with time,
as though they were broken into crumbs before dying.
You will fall with me like a stone into a grave
and thus, through our unconsumated love,
with us, the earth shall continue to live.
